Message from the President

Founded on the UC Berkeley Campus in 1907, Sigma Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi is home to more than 90 women. Our beautiful historic house is located at 2311 Prospect, next to Memorial Stadium and within walking distance of Strawberry Canyon. Moving to its third chapter house in the 1920’s, the architect of our current location was Stafford Lelean Jory, a professor of architecture at UC Berkeley who married one of his former classmates, Grace Weeks, an AOII. Being one of the first houses to be built specifically for a sorority, this house is unique in that it has a similar style to the historic buildings on campus. Stafford Jory in fact had a considerable hand in helping John Galen Howard design some of the most famous buildings on campus: Wheeler Hall, Hilgard Hall, Doe Library, Edwards Field Track Stadium, and was largely responsible for much of the design in the present Boalt School of Law built in 1950.

Just celebrating our Centennial Anniversary this year, we are proud to be a part of UC Berkeley’s history. Having a four day celebration, AOII welcomed professors, student leaders, Pan-Hellenic Council, IFC, NPHC, MCGC, ASUC, our International AOII President, and over 300 AOII Alumnae traveling from all over the United States. Not only was it a great opportunity to meet fellow AOII’s and active leaders in the Berkeley community, but it truly showed how much this organization can mean to members 60 years later. We've enjoyed one hundred years of memories including Cal football, socials, and sunsets from our deck. Our 100th anniversary is a celebration of Sigma chapter's continued presence, memories, and above all, sisterhood.

A place for friendship, opportunity, and inspiration, AOII offers its members a gateway to becoming actively involved on campus and throughout the community. Composed of NCAA and intramural athletes, philanthropists, ASUC leaders, campus tour guides, members of pre-law and pre-med fraternities, musicians, an MCAT instructor, Order of Omega members, etc, AOII exposes its members to a number of activities and fun throughout their college years!

I personally believe that joining the Greek community is one of the best ways to become more involved on Berkeley’s campus, find a home away from home, create friendships for a lifetime, and achieve your goals. With support, exposure to a variety of academic and outside interests, and loving friends, this organization is a valued part of my history and growth as an individual.
