Message from the President
Founded on the UC Berkeley Campus in 1907, Sigma Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi is home to more than 90 women. Our beautiful historic house is located at 2311 Prospect, next to Memorial Stadium and within walking distance of Strawberry Canyon. Moving to its third chapter house in the 1920 s, the architect of our current location was Stafford Lelean Jory, a professor of architecture at UC Berkeley who married one of his former classmates, Grace Weeks, an AOII. Being one of the first houses to be built specifically for a sorority, this house is unique in that it has a similar style to the historic buildings on campus. Stafford Jory in fact had a considerable hand in helping John Galen Howard design some of the most famous buildings on campus: Wheeler Hall, Hilgard Hall, Doe Library, Edwards Field Track Stadium, and was largely responsible for much of the design in the present Boalt School of Law built in 1950.
A place for friendship, opportunity, and inspiration, AOII offers its members a gateway to becoming actively involved on campus and throughout the community. Composed of athletes, philanthropists, ASUC leaders, campus tour guides, members of pre-law and pre-med fraternities, musicians, Order of Omega members, etc, AOII thrives in it s diversity and promotes activity in a broad spectrum of interests and organizations.
I have found that AOII is not only an organization, but a family. Coming from a small town, Berkeley was overwhelming, but my sisters took me under their wings and made Berkeley a home. Although each of us has our own activities and interests, we are forever connected through AOII and the bond of lifelong friendship. There is no doubt in my mind that the friends I made here will be my friends long after graduation.
